Jesus writing in the sand. Each read something different.
Eventually an entire book was compiled out of the details shared in the Jesus readings, along with references to when early Christian and Gnostic accounts of His life were edited out of what became the Bible, and how some stories were misinterpreted or incomplete. Such was the account of Jesus writing words in the sand when a woman, accused of adultery, was about to be stoned. The Bible reveals only that Jesus wrote in the sand. Cayce—in trance—reveals that the words he wrote miraculously appeared differently to each person who was present. They read only of their own sins.
Morton, more than anyone else, steeped himself in the Jesus readings and was so moved by them that he eventually converted to Catholicism. He was also the only person in the circle of confidants who urged Edgar to not only pay close attention to the advice coming through in the readings, but to also do exactly as the Source recommended. “If the readings say Virginia Beach, then that’s where you should go,” he told Edgar.
Morton further made the move possible. He increased Edgar and Gladys’ salary, rented them a house in Virginia Beach, and provided $1,000 to get them there. The family didn’t know what to expect—the city was merely an isolated summer community on the windswept Atlantic shores, hundreds of miles from anyone they knew—but it was where the readings had said they ought to go. The prospect of living in a home of their own after two years spent in hotels and efficiency apartments would be a welcome treat.
In September 1925, the Cayces and Gladys arrived by train in Norfolk and then continued by trolley to Virginia Beach. It would be several months before Morton, or anyone else, joined them there for a visit. The family was surprised, even shocked, by how desolate a location the Source had selected. Off-season the place looked like a ghost town comprised of two and three-story cottages, rooming houses, boarded-up souvenir shops, and a restaurant. The single hardware store was also the pharmacy. As Edgar soon found out, it was owned and operated by Virginia Beach’s mayor who doubled as its postmaster.
The readings given for the Blumenthals, conducted twice a day and nearly every day but Sunday, were sent by mail or wired to New York. Now, in addition to the stock market readings and the ongoing Jesus readings, Morton began asking the Source to interpret his family’s dreams, which would one day also comprise enough material to fill a book. Although Morton and Edgar had experimented with doing dream readings earlier in the year and the Source had specifically told the team to “pay more attention to dreams, for this is where truths are given,” it wasn’t until the family reached Virginia Beach that their true worth was revealed.
The most important of the early dream readings was given for Adeline, who was now pregnant with her and Morton’s first child. In the first of what
